Islamic rulings on dress

Translated by: Alamgeer Usmani.

Praise belongs to Allah, we praise Him, and we ask Him for help and forgiveness. We seek protection in Allah from the malice of our souls, and the evil of our actions. Whom Allah guides, no one can lead him astray, and whom He makes astray, no one can lead him back to the right path. I bear witness that there is no other deity but Allah alone who has no partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and messenger.

“O people, fear your Lord and fear a day when no father will help his son, nor will a son be helpful to his father at all. Surely, the promise of Allah is true. So, the worldly life must not deceive you, nor should you ever be deceived about Allah by the Deceiver”.

After that, dear believers:

This noble command to “fear Allah” came from our Lord fifty-four times with the same wording.

When Allah commanded people to take physical provisions, like eating and drinking during the journey of Hajj, He also advised them, after that, to take actual continuous provision that would benefit them in this world and in the Hereafter. And that is the “piety” which is the best provision. Have we ever sensed this meaning?

In another place, Allah the Almighty has favored the children of Adam with the clothing which covers their nakedness and beautifies them.

﴿ يَا بَنِي آدَمَ قَدْ أَنزَلْنَا عَلَيْكُمْ لِبَاساً يُوَارِي سَوْءَاتِكُمْ وَرِيشاً ﴾

“O children of ’Adam, We have sent down to you the dress that covers your shame and provides adornment”.

After that, he pointed to the best, most important and moral dress, and He said:

﴿ وَلِبَاسُ التَّقْوَىَ ذَلِكَ خَيْرٌ ﴾

“As for the dress of Taqwa (piety), that is the best”.

When you beautify yourself with clothes, remember that your adornment with piety, outwardly and inwardly, is more beautiful and better. Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, said: “Attire of piety” means: good deed, and Urwa Ibn al-Zubayr said: It means: Fear of Allah.

Dear friends:

After the verse in which Allah the Almighty favored us with the blessing of the dress, He the Almighty said in the next verse, warning people:

“O children of ’Adam, “Do not let Satan put you in trouble the way he had your parents expelled from Paradise, having their dress removed from them, so that he could show them their shame. Indeed, he sees you _ he and his company _ from where you do not see them”.

The enmity of the devil is old. It has been from the time of our father Adam, peace be upon him, he tried to get him out of Paradise, which is the abode of bliss, to the abode of fatigue and suffering, and he caused his private parts to be torn apart after they were covered. And he has done because of great enmity as the indecency is the job of devil.

Today, we will get to know some issues regarding clothing which contradict the evidences of Qur’an and hadith. Otherwise, the basic principle regarding clothing is to be permissible.

When it was said to the Prophet, may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him: “Verily a person loves that his dress should be fine, and his shoes should be fine. He (the Holy Prophet) remarked: Verily, Allah is beautiful and He loves beauty” as in Sahih Muslim.

So, giving of Allah, Glory be to Him, is greater than His preventing. He does not prevent his servants from anything except for a great wisdom and a comprehensive interest, because He is the All-Knowing, the Wise, and the Owner of vast mercy.

Here, we will mention some taboos regarding dress, which are below:

It is prohibited to wear clothes which show the private parts or make them visible due to narrowness, transparency or shortness.

"The Permanent Committee" has responded that: “It is not permissible to wear transparent clothes that describe the private parts, and to wear the tight clothes that show all the joints of the body.”

The dress must be relatively wide, thick and full, so that it does not show the private parts, and does not describe private parts due to narrowness, clarity or transparency.

Here is a big mistake and it is forbidden to do that. But unfortunately, some women are involved in that.

That is: that women wear cloth for tightness or transparency. You may have seen in the markets that these clothes are offered in abundance.

Despite that, however, we must take care of the safety of our religion. Because all of you are guardians and responsible for your wards and the things under your care. And the guardianship is for you. O, the group of men.

It is sufficient in intimidation what is narrated in Sahih Muslim, with a chain of transmission traceable back to the Prophet: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: “Two are the types of the denizens of Hell whom I did not see: people having flogs like the tails of the ox with them and they would be beating people, and the women who would be dressed but appear to be naked, who would be inclined (to evil) and make their husbands incline towards it. Their heads would be like the humps of the bukht camel inclined to one side. They will not enter Paradise and they would not smell its odour whereas its odour would be smelt from such and such distance”.

And among the things which are prohibited from clothing is: anything that imitates the infidels, such as their dress, or what has a sign or emblem for them.

Every clothing that is specific to the infidels and it is not worn by anyone else, so it is not permissible for a Muslim, man or woman, to wear it, whether it is such a clothing which includes the whole body or a part of it. Because it is recorded by Abu Dawood, with a chain of transmission traceable to the Prophet, “He who imitates any people (in their actions) is considered to be one of them” authenticated by Al-Albani.

In a statement on the prohibition of imitating people, the Islamic scholar Uthaymeen said: “resemblance” is that a person does anything from the characteristics which are specific to disbeliever, like clothing which only the disbelievers wear. But if the dress is common among the infidels and Muslims. It is not resemblance”.

And “resemblance to disbeliever” requires that the imitator feel that the people whom he is imitating, are higher than him, he admires their craftsmanship, and he is fascinated by their appearances. This may lead him to follow them in beliefs, actions, customs and affairs.

It is better to point out that it is forbidden to wear sports clothing bearing the name of an infidel player.

Among the things that are not permissible are: men’s imitation of women, or vice versa.

Every garment that is specific to one of the genders, whether it includes the whole body, such as a dress, or includes the specific part of the body, such as pants and a head covering, it is not permissible for the other gender to wear it. As it is reported authentic and explicit texts regarding that. Among them there is a narration in Al-Bukhari on the authority of Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, cursed men who imitate women, and women who imitate men.”

And on the authority of Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, he said: The Messenger of Allah cursed a man who wears a woman’s clothing, and cursed a woman who wears a man’s clothing.”

Al-Albani said: It is authentic hadith according to the conditions of Muslim. And the hadith has a link, we will complete it shortly, Inshallah. May Allah help me and you...

Second Sermon

Thank Allah who created everything and then guided it, and imposed upon His servants the guidance what He has revealed, and may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon the one who is chosen servant, and chosen Prophet, and upon those who follow their guidance and walked on their footsteps.

Afterwards,

Among the cloths what have been forbidden is the “dress of fame”. That is what contradicts what people are upon, draws attention and provokes wonder and laughter. As the Permanent Committee has responded.

It is common among the women, that they wear expensive clothes in order to attract attention and gain fame, this often leads to arrogance, haughtiness and pride.

Ahmad, Abu Dawood, and Ibn Majah recorded a hadith on the authority of Ibn Umar, with a chain of transmission traceable to the Prophet: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Whoever wears a garment of pride and vanity, Allah will clothe him, on the Day of Resurrection, in a garment of humiliation.’ Classed as hasan by Al-Albani.

Imam Ahmad, may Allah have mercy on him, saw a man wearing a cloak with white and black stripes, so he said: Put this off, and wear the clothes of the people of your country.

The people of knowledge have two opinions regarding the ruling of the “cloth of fame”.

It was said: that it is makrooh (disliked).

And it was also said: that it is forbidden.

It should be noted that the garment of fame does not require to be precious, rather fame may be in poor clothes.

Ibn Taymiyyah, may Allah have mercy on him, said: Indeed, the predecessors hated the fame of haughtiness and the fame of humiliation ...".

Dear friends,

Today, a group of our youth goes out in strange, reprehensible and mean clothes, but it is, thank Allah, a small percentage, and excuse me for talking about them to those who did not see them and did not know about them.

Their clothing is a discord against our Sharia, our values and our customs. It is known as “Tehni” or “Papa forgive me.”

It is the pants which one wears but it does not come over his entire buttock, and underwear, which is under the pants and covers his private parts, appears to the people.

It is a reprehensible view. The noble mindedness of the man rejects it, the common sense and manhood refuses it, even if it was deficient in aspects of religion.

This fashion has many forbidden things, including: not covering the private parts which are required to be covered by Sharia, and also these clothes have become a symbol of homosexuals or the so-called third sex, as it is an invitation to immorality, whether the wearer of this, feels or not.

The threat has occurred regarding it, and it is also a “dress of fame”. And it resembles the infidels as its origin is from them. In terms of customs and mores, it is contrary to noble-mindedness and common sense.

It is prohibited in some states in America, and they punish its wearer.

According to the Ministry of Interior, this dress called Tahini is considered one of the violations related to clothing and public appearance.

We ask Allah to guide us, young and old, to the truth. Oh Allah, show us the truth and guide us to follow it. Oh Allah, guide us to adopt the best morals....
